Periodic tiling

From a structural point of view, any geometric ornament is composed, in its design phase, from a geometric partition of the space. This initial partition is often deliberately discarded from the final pattern, especially in Islamic East art. On the other hand, it is well highlighted and constitutes the framework for the construction of the geometric ornamentation of the Muslim West.

There are two types of periodic paving:

  • Regular paving: The same polygon is used for the whole partition.

The three current divisions of the plan, called regular partitions, lead to the following three isometric tilings:

  • Semi-regular paving made up of regular non-isometric polygons: This allows the use of several regular polygons so that polygons always surround a vertex in the same order. There are 8 types of semi-regular pavings.
